jQuery Cedar Rapids
Chris Missal, January 26th, 2010
Today, jQuery.com created an area for meetups to get gather steam and collect some ideas and thoughts. I had to take advantage of this since a jQuery group or meetup in Cedar Rapids would be right up my alley!
Hey, Check it Out, 2009 is Almost Over
Chris Missal, December 21st, 2009
Just a quick note to check out the links here to my this years review and plans for next year. Remember all that Y2K scary crap? That was 10 years ago!!
A Better jQuery Horizontal Bar Graph
Chris Missal, December 16th, 2009
I got another one finished in under a year! I posted an article about a jQuery plugin that I wrote out of the code I posted in August 2008 for creating a horizontal bar graph using jQuery. You can check out the plugin page for more information and demos.
Ten Months Feels Like Yesterday
Chris Missal, November 18th, 2009
I haven't posted here since early January of this year. I feel bad about it cause I was kind of on a roll with some decent posts. Since this site is custom built, it's not as easy to update as sites that run on Wordpress, Community Server or anything else that is halfway mature. In the last year I feel like I've also gotten much better at development; I think I can modify this beast to make updates a lot easier. Once updates are easier I'll be more likely to post more often. Hope to post something soon, until then, cheers!
Pablo, DumpsterDoggy... DumpsterDoggy, Pablo

Just to let everybody who doesn't already know, I've graciously accepted an invitation to blog for Los Techies!
I Know Nothing About Software Development Process
Chris Missal, January 3rd, 2009
I was privileged to meet Derick Bailey in Austin, Oct/Nov 2008 at the Continuous Improvement in Software Development (Kaizen Conf) (among many others). I hope not putting words in your mouth Derick, but I remember you telling a group of us your "problem " of not having anywhere else to go when it comes to development methodologies. What a unique and amazing predicament to be in. The following is a series of blog posts from Derick that I've been trying to pay attention to as much as I can:
Thoughts on Family and my Profession
Chris Missal, December 28th, 2008
This morning my grandfather Marvin Eischen passed away. I wasn't super-close to him, but I do know that he is of the kindest, and most intelligent people I've ever known. Active in the community and father to 6, he will be missed, by many. Rest in peace Grandpa Marv. :)
On to development: I decided to share a comment I posted on Davy Brion's blog. Check out my comment of Junior vs Senior Developers
Chris' Year in Review 2008
Chris Missal, December 21st, 2008
Even though 2008 isn't over yet, I'd still like to share some reasons why it has been the best year for me as a developer yet.
Observing the Observer Pattern
Chris Missal, December 20th, 2008
Learning more patterns an how and when they're useful. This time I spend a quick moment on the Observer Pattern.
Thanks Again Google!
Chris Missal, December 15th, 2008
I finally signed up for a Google Code project for this site. It doesn't include any of the source code for this blog, (that may come later) but does contain some code samples that I'd like to share. Mostly, these are created to share with specific people and specific projects in mind. I thought it would be good to open them to everybody since I'm going to be presenting some ideas and code that is applicable to more than just the audience for which they're intended.
Opera 10 Gets a Win for Not Giving In
Chris Missal, December 12th, 2008
Viewing my site in Opera 10 showed me a visible error that the other browsers were too weak to tell me about.
Delicious Bookmarks
Chris Missal, December 11th, 2008
I was taught that sharing can be a good thing at a very early age. Why on earth I haven't been sharing my bookmarks is unknown to me. I created a delicious account today to store and share my bookmarks with everybody else. This will most likely get a lot of attention early on, as I import my bookmarks from various browser on various computers and laptops from home and work. That statement in itself is probably a solid reason that I should have done this long ago. Anyhow, feel free to visit DumpsterDoggy's Bookmarks .
Start Small, jQuery uses Method Chaining
Chris Missal, December 11th, 2008
Increase code quality with a decent understanding of jQuery's method chaining. A small step towards fluent interfaces.
Holy Ruby on Rails Batman!
Chris Missal, December 9th, 2008
I posed a simple question on Twitter about learning Ruby and boy did I get some immediate, awesome help!
WPF and My New "Get Stuff Done" Schedule
Chris Missal, December 8th, 2008
Alright! I got this one out just before midnight so I don't have to change the published date! This post is a mix of good stuff as well as some stupid crap I added. I was in a weird mood when I wrote it, enjoy!
Hey JavaScript! What about the NoScript tag?!
Chris "Beardy" Missal, December 5th, 2008
Sounds pretty dumb huh? There's no rule that says JavaScript can't know about the contents of a noscript tag, only that the browser must render it for script disabled browsers. I found an inconsistency in this between popular browsers (guess which ones) and I'm pleading that they follow the right path going forward.
Read my most recent post: My Plea for JavaScript to Use the NoScript Tag.
Concentration on Validation
Chris "Patches" Missal, November 22nd, 2008
I've been spending a lot of time lately working with Castle's Validators and jQuery's Validation plug-in. I'll have some good posts coming up soon on both of these. In both cases, I've modified them to perform in such a way that benefits my projects. The beauty of open source, you can take something that works well and make it work just as good for you. The best part is just adding my own tests to the existing ones. Thank you TestDriven.Net and QUnit!
Comments now include your web site
Chris "Cinnamon Buns" Missal, November 15th, 2008
I have added a Website field on the comments for Articles, feel free to link back your site/blog/some other website.
Back Into Development and Architecture
Chris "Danger" Missal, November 13th, 2008
So I wouldn't call it ADD, but I shift where my focus is on a daily, if not hourly, basis. I was going crazy with jQuery not long ago, then I got back into a CSS and XHTML kick and now I'm reading up on design patterns and architectures. I'll consider that a good thing. It keeps me on my toes and not stuck on one thing. My post tonight is about Leveraging Windsor and the Strategy Pattern. I'd love some feedback on this. If you have a moment leave a comment at the bottom of the page.
Also, I've been spending a lot of time on a side-project I'm calling MadeUpStats. I'll have some updates on that soon I'm sure.
DumpsterDoggy got a Makeover
Chris Missal, November 6th, 2008
I decided that I didn't like the site's appearance so I decided to give it a new look. Also the old bar on the right was a lot wider and caused some display issues with lower resolution monitors that I overlooked. I use dual 1680 x 1050 at home. :D
Internet Back, and Back from KaizenConf
Chris Missal, November 5th, 2008
Alright, I got a lot of great knowledge out of the Continuous Improvement in Software Development Conference and now the my internet connection is finally connected to my new place... I can start to blog about it. I'm going to try to get it all on here by this time next week.
Tie it Together Using jQuery - Yet Another Reason jQuery Rocks!
Chris Missal, October 17th, 2008
Another tutorial that expands upon the last. Tie it
Together Using jQuery talks about, and shows, how to use the <rel> tag (or whatever) to link
your elements together for easy coding and interaction. I feel like this is a great example of how powerful
jQuery can be. If it's not painfully obvious, I'm on a huge jQuery kick right now.
My Interview about Continuous Improvement
Chris Missal, October 16th, 2008
I have learned a lot over the last several months. Many new concepts and practices have been introduced by Tim Barcz who started working with me those several months ago. Tim asked me some questions about my challenges and any advice I could give to others that are also pursuing these same concepts and practices. Thanks for letting me share my thoughts Tim! You can also view Tim's posts at his devlicio.us blog, or read the whole article.
Another Update, Guess What? Yep! jQuery Again
Chris Missal, October 10th, 2008
I added another jQuery sample. Tab-Like Click Toggle in jQuery. It's one that I end up writing in one way or another quite a bit, I thought it was worth sharing. I have a list of future topics I want to show/write about/discuss. Unfortunately that list is at work and I won't get at it until at least Monday.
Upcoming: (For those who follow this for the non-techie stuff)
Omaha, this weekend to hang with the old gang. Next weekend I'll be moving into my newer, nicer, bigger apartment. Then 2 weeks after that, Halloween weekend through the second I'll be in Austin for the Continuous Improvement in Software Development Conference. I can't wait!
Also, be sure to sign up for Iowa Code Camp on Nov 8th!
Update to the jQuery Double Click code thingy
Chris Missal, September 24th, 2008
I added some additional content to my Combine jQuery and Double Clicks to Get Data post to explain how I found it useful. If you think comments don't get read... think again. Also, 17 days without an update, not good. Time to get back in gear!
